What Do We Hope to Learn?

Survey data will help to answer a variety of questions about the lives and travels of hummingbirds, including:

  • What are the nesting ranges and habitats for each species?
  • What is the schedule for spring and fall migration for each species?
  • What are the most important migratory corridors?
  • How do natural nectar sources, garden flowers, and feeders affect hummingbird distribution?
  • How do weather and land uses affect nesting and migration?
  • How well do different species adapt to urbanization?
  • How have drought and fire suppression affected hummingbird distribution?
  • Are hummingbird ranges changing in response to global warming?
  • Are Anna’s Hummingbirds continuing to expand their range?
  • Are any species expanding their winter ranges?
