Who We Are
The Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory (SABO) is a non-profit scientific and educational organization based in Bisbee, Arizona. Our mission is to promote conservation of the birds of southeastern Arizona, their habitats, and the diversity of species which share those habitats through research, monitoring and public education.

What We Do
Outreach:
Conservation begins with understanding and appreciation. SABO’s programs include walks, workshops, and tours at a variety of outstanding natural areas throughout Cochise County, the heart of southeastern Arizona’s birding paradise. Entertaining and informative presentations for civic and conservation groups, schools, and community events throughout Arizona and nationwide help to build a broad constituency for conservation of Arizona’s wildlife and habitats. SABO also actively promotes ecotourism as a component of sustainable rural economies, acting as consultant to both the public and private sector and cultivating birder-friendly businesses.

Research & Monitoring: SABO biologists, working in cooperation with government agencies, educational institutions, other conservation organizations, and dedicated volunteers, are gathering information vital to conservation planning. The most prominent of these efforts is a long-term banding study of hummingbirds of the San Pedro River in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, the Friends of the San Pedro River, and private landowners. SABO has also assisted the National Park Service, Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Arizona Game & Fish Department in monitoring populations of breeding and migrating songbirds and also monitors wintering raptors of the Sulphur Springs Valley in an independent study funded in part by the Arizona Bird Conservation Initiative. SABO staff have also assisted public agencies in assessing bird activity in areas affected by wildfires and mining.

How You Can Help
Your tax-deductible membership or donation helps make all this possible. Benefits of membership include an annual report, e-mail updates, discounts on activities such as walks and workshops, and most of all the satisfaction of contributing to the future of southeastern Arizona's imperiled wildlife and wild lands. Business members are listed in both the on-line and print versions of the "Birder-friendly Businesses" list. Please consider making a contribution today.
