We are excited to be offering another January trip to Rancho Primavera outside Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Our last trip was such a great experience we had to schedule another. We begin our trip in Puerto Vallarta with a whale watching tour in the bay where our last trip saw about a dozen humpbacked whales and had a local marine biologist as our guide.

After the whale-watching trip we meet our guides for the rest of the trip, Steve Shunk and Lizzy Martinez and travel to Rancho Primavera, our home base for the rest of the trip. How nice to only unpack once and settle into the comfortable ranch setting. The ranch bird feeders are busy with colorful birds, including some like Yellow Grosbeak, Blue Mockingbird and Plain-capped Star-throat, which are mega-rarities when they venture into Arizona, but are common here. Others like Black-throated Magpie Jay and Yellow-winged Cacique are strictly Mexican species.

The trails at the ranch offer great birding and we also make day trips to nearby birding spots, including a beach town accessible by boat and the wonderful Puerto Vallarta Botanic Gardens. The pace is relaxed with time to just hang out at the ranch’s feeders or enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Meals are often at small family-run restaurants where you watch your tortillas being made before they are brought to the table and the “catch of the day” seafood is whatever the cook caught the previous night.
